The short answer
Yes, if you have a City of San José Junk Pickup appointment. The program is free for houses and apartment complexes, takes up to 12 items, and lets you set them out no more than 24 hours before collection on your garbage day. Without an appointment, furniture on the curb is illegal dumping. If you would rather nothing touch the curb, a sofa picked up from inside is $126 and a dresser $126.
The San José set-out rules, in order
The City's Environmental Services Department publishes clear rules for Junk Pickup, and almost every curb problem comes from skipping one of them.
- Book it. Request a pickup through 311. You will get confirmation within two business days.
- Know your date. Collection is scheduled on your regular garbage and recycling day, not on a day you pick.
- Count to 12. Each request covers up to 12 items. Furniture, mattresses and tires are on the accepted list.
- Wait for the window. Items go out no more than 24 hours before the appointment.
- Place it correctly. On the street by the curb. Not in a red zone, not beside a fire hydrant and not next to a parked car where it blocks a door or a driveway.
Get those five right and the curb is a perfectly legal, completely free way to clear furniture. Renters can use it too, which surprises a lot of people in apartment complexes.
What happens if you skip the appointment
Furniture on the curb without a booked pickup is not waiting for anything. Nobody is coming for it on schedule. It sits there, and the longer it sits, the more it looks like dumping, because legally that is what it is.
Illegal dumping is a state offense under California Penal Code section 374.3, and San José runs its own illegal-dumping enforcement. In practice the first consequence is usually social, not legal. Neighbors report it, other people add their own junk to the pile, and a single armchair becomes a sidewalk problem with your address in front of it.
Then there is the weather. A winter atmospheric-river storm will soak an upholstered couch through in an evening. A wet couch weighs far more, smells worse and is far harder for anyone to collect. A curb pile that was a free pickup on Tuesday can be a paid cleanup by Friday.
Santa Clara and Mountain View play by different rules
The curb rules change at the city line, and around here the city line is often invisible.
Santa Clara only collects bulky items during its Annual Cleanup Campaign. In 2026 that ran April 27 to May 22, with four weekly collection periods and items out by 7 a.m. on the Monday. Setting out early can bring a $150 fine. Outside the campaign, the curb is not an option.
Mountain View requires an appointment with Recology before anything goes out, and residents get two cleanups per calendar year. Each covers a bagged or boxed pile up to 4 by 4 by 8 feet plus up to three bulky items, set out by 7 a.m.
Sunnyvale, Cupertino, Campbell, Milpitas, Los Gatos and the other neighboring cities run their own programs. Check your city's page rather than assuming San José's rules apply. Your garbage bill names your hauler and your city.
Where the curb does not work even with an appointment
The City's program is generous, but it assumes you can get the furniture to the street and leave it there for up to a day. Plenty of San José homes cannot.
- Apartment towers. Downtown and North San José buildings have no curb you control, and management may forbid staging furniture on the sidewalk or in the garage.
- Student rentals. In Japantown and around SJSU, a narrow street with every space parked solid leaves nowhere legal to put a couch.
- HOA communities. Many subdivisions in Evergreen, Silver Creek and Almaden Valley frown on curb piles even for one night.
- Hillside driveways. In the Almaden foothills or on a long Los Gatos driveway, the curb may be a hundred feet down a slope.
In any of these, the honest answer is that the curb is technically available and practically useless.
Curbside pickup versus carry-out from inside
| Item | Flat price, carried out |
|---|---|
| Sofa / Couch | $126 |
| Sectional Sofa (3-Piece) | $185 |
| Dresser (Standard) | $126 |
| Mattress + Box Spring Set | $143 |
| Dining Table (6-8 Seat) | $163 |
| Recliner | $98 |
| Bookshelf | $72 |
A typical move-out set of a sofa, a queen set and a dresser is $126 + $143 + $126 = $395. A recliner and a bookshelf together are $98 + $72 = $170.
With a flat pickup, nothing goes to the curb. Vetted, insured local haulers carry everything out from wherever it is, on any floor, with no stairs fee. There is no 24-hour window and no appointment slot tied to your garbage day.
Which to use
Use the City's Junk Pickup if you live in San José, your items can reach the street, you have 12 or fewer, and you can wait for your garbage day. It is free, and it is a good program.
Use a pickup from inside if the furniture is upstairs, your building or HOA forbids curb staging, you have more than the program allows, or you need it gone on a specific day. Book by 4 PM and same-day pickup is usually possible, in a two-hour window you choose, seven days a week from 8am to midnight.
Either way, never put furniture out early hoping it will disappear. In this region, that is how a free option becomes a fine. Get a price from a photo on the instant quote page before deciding.
Frequently asked questions
How early can I put furniture on the curb in San Jose?
No more than 24 hours before your scheduled Junk Pickup appointment. The pickup is booked through 311 and happens on your regular garbage and recycling day.
Can renters use San José's Junk Pickup?
Yes. The program is free for single-family homes and multi-family complexes, and both property owners and renters can use it. Check your lease for any building rules about staging items.
Where exactly should the items go?
On the street by the curb. Keep them out of red zones, away from fire hydrants and clear of parked cars.
Is it illegal to leave furniture on the curb without an appointment?
Yes. Outside a scheduled pickup it is treated as illegal dumping under California law, and San José runs its own enforcement on top of that.
Can you pick up furniture without me moving it outside?
Yes. Crews carry items out from any room and any floor at the flat price, with no stairs fee. A sofa is $126.
