The short answer

Curbside bulky programs around San José do not carry anything out of your home, cap how much you can put out (12 items per request in San José, three bulky items plus a pile in Mountain View), exclude hazardous waste and contractor-type debris in the cities that publish their lists, and run on their own calendar. A flat pickup covers all five gaps, starting at the $100 order minimum, with a quarter truck at $241.

First, what the programs do well

It is worth being fair. San José's Junk Pickup is free for single-family homes and multi-family complexes, renters and owners alike, and accepts furniture, mattresses and tires among other items. You book through 311, get confirmation within two business days and set items out no more than 24 hours before collection on your garbage day.

Mountain View gives residents two free Recology cleanups a year, each a bagged pile up to 4 by 4 by 8 feet plus up to three bulky items. Santa Clara runs an Annual Cleanup Campaign each spring that takes bulky items, appliances, tires, e-waste, lumber and brush up to six feet.

If your job fits inside those rules, use them. The five gaps below are where they stop, and San José's full exclusion list is on the City's Junk Pickup page if you want to check a specific item before booking.

1. Anything that is still inside

Every one of these programs is curbside. The crew collects what you have placed on the street. Nobody comes into the house, climbs to the second floor or backs a dolly into the garage.

That is the biggest gap in practice. An armoire in an upstairs bedroom in Evergreen, a sleeper sofa on the third floor of a Santa Clara garden complex, or a treadmill in a converted garage in Westgate all have to reach the curb first. For a lot of households, that is the whole job.

A flat pickup starts inside. Crews carry items out from any floor, with no stairs fee. A treadmill is $115, a large armoire $197 and a sleeper sofa $149, each carried from where it sits to the truck. Nothing waits on the sidewalk overnight, which also solves the HOA and building-rule problem.

2. More than the program's limit

San José's program covers up to 12 items per request. Mountain View's covers a pile plus three bulky items per appointment, twice a year. Santa Clara's covers one cubic yard of bagged debris free, then charges $25 per cubic yard.

Those limits are fine for one room. They fall apart on a whole-house job. A three-bedroom estate cleanout in Willow Glen can easily hold eighty or a hundred pieces, and an over-full garage in Cambrian can hold more.

There is no item cap on a flat pickup. Larger jobs use truck-fill tiers, from $241 for a quarter truck up to $732 for a full truck of about 16 cubic yards. A full truck plus a half truck for a big estate is $732 + $431 = $1,163, priced up front.

3. Hazardous household waste

Santa Clara's campaign excludes household hazardous waste and lithium-battery devices. Mountain View's cleanups exclude household hazardous waste, vehicle batteries and fluorescent tubes. Expect the same caution from any curbside program.

Hazardous waste is not a standard item for JunkRabbit either. Solvents, pool chemicals, pesticides and similar products are handled case by case, so ask before booking. Your county's household hazardous waste program is usually the right home for them.

Paint is the exception people do not expect. We accept paint, at $30 for a one-gallon can and $52 for a five-gallon bucket. A garage shelf of six one-gallon cans is $30 + $30 + $30 + $30 + $30 + $30 = $180. Old paint is one of the most common things left over when a garage is being cleared for an ADU.

4. Remodel and contractor debris

Santa Clara's campaign excludes contractor debris and treated wood. Mountain View's cleanups exclude concrete, soil, rock, stumps and large construction and demolition loads.

That leaves out exactly what San José homeowners generate most: remodel debris from Willow Glen and Rose Garden kitchen jobs, drywall and lumber from garage conversions, and old fencing and deck boards from side yards.

On a flat pickup, renovation materials are priced items. Drywall is $37 per sheet or small bundle, lumber or wood scrap $41 per bundle, a full kitchen cabinet rip-out $293 and concrete or masonry debris $219 per quarter truck. A small bathroom demo with a fiberglass tub, a toilet and a vanity is $90 + $64 + $69 = $223.

Flag treated wood from old decks when you book. It is handled separately at local facilities.

5. Your timeline

San José's pickup lands on your regular garbage day after confirmation. Santa Clara's runs once a year. Mountain View's needs an appointment before anything goes out. None of them work around a lease end, a home sale closing or a contractor who arrives on Monday.

A flat pickup works on your schedule. Crews run seven days a week from 8am to midnight in two-hour arrival windows, and booking by 4 PM usually gets same-day service. The price is the same whether it is today or next week, with no same-day surcharge.

Get a price from a photo on the instant quote page. If your job fits the City's rules and your calendar, use the free program. If it hits any of these five gaps, the flat price is shown before you book and only changes if you approve.
