Where a Removed Appliance Goes

Refrigerant First

Federal rules require a certified technician to recover the refrigerant in fridges, freezers and AC units before they’re scrapped. That’s why they go to an appliance recycler, never straight to a landfill.

Then the Metal

Once the refrigerant is out, the steel and copper are recycled. Washers, dryers and ranges go the same scrap route.
