The short answer
If your couch can get to the curb and you can wait for your garbage day, the City of San José's Junk Pickup takes it free. If it has to come out of an upstairs unit, through an HOA neighborhood or out of the house today, a flat pickup is $126 for a standard sofa, $119 for a loveseat and $185 for a three-piece sectional, carried out from any floor.
Option 1: sell it or give it away
In a metro with this much relocation churn, there is always someone furnishing a first apartment. A clean couch in a neutral fabric, under ten years old, from a pet-free and smoke-free home, will often move on a local listing within a day or two.
Be honest about what you have. A sleeper sofa with a working mechanism is worth listing. A sagging sectional with a torn arm is not, and listing it just means fielding messages for a week before you end up hauling it anyway.
Give yourself a deadline. If nobody has picked it up by a set date, move on to another option. Also think about the stairs: a buyer who shows up with one friend and a hatchback to collect a sleeper sofa from a third-floor walk-up in Santa Clara is a buyer who leaves without it. Measure the couch and the doorways before you post, and put both in the listing.
Option 2: the City's free Junk Pickup
The City of San José's Environmental Services Department runs Junk Pickup for both single-family homes and multi-family complexes. It is free, renters can use it as well as owners, and each request covers up to 12 items. Furniture is on the accepted list.
You request through 311 and the City confirms within two business days. The pickup is scheduled on your regular garbage and recycling day, and the couch can go out up to 24 hours before. It must be on the street by the curb, not in a red zone, next to a hydrant or beside a parked car.
This works beautifully for a ranch house in Westgate or Blossom Valley where you can drag the couch down the driveway. It works badly in buildings with no street frontage of your own, and in HOA communities where curb piles draw letters. If you live in Santa Clara, Mountain View or another city, your program is different, so check it first.
Option 3: haul it yourself
Self-hauling is legitimate if you have a truck or can borrow one. Zanker Recycling on Los Esteros Road takes bulky items on weekdays, and the SMaRT Station at 301 Carl Road in Sunnyvale serves residents of several neighboring cities and is open daily.
The work is the hard part. A standard three-seat sofa weighs more than it looks, and sleeper sofas are much heavier because of the steel mechanism inside. You need two people, furniture sliders and a plan for the doorway turn. Strap it properly before the freeway.
Price it out before you commit. Add a truck rental if you need one, the gate fee, fuel and a half-day. Then compare that with a flat price that includes the carry-out and the disposal. For a single couch, the difference is often a few hours and a sore back rather than real money.
Flat couch removal prices
| Item | Flat price |
|---|---|
| Sofa / Couch | $126 |
| Loveseat | $119 |
| Sleeper Sofa | $149 |
| Reclining / Power Sofa | $152 |
| Sectional Sofa (2-Piece) | $141 |
| Sectional Sofa (3-Piece) | $185 |
| Sectional Sofa (4+ Piece) | $228 |
| Sectional Sofa (5-6 Piece) | $271 |
| Sofa (Oversize 90"+ / Disassembly / Cut-Apart) | $185 |
A sofa and matching loveseat together are $126 + $119 = $245. A living room clear-out with a sofa, an armchair and a coffee table is $126 + $77 + $67 = $270.
Those prices cover carrying it out, loading and disposal. There is no stairs fee, no walk-up fee and no same-day surcharge.
Where couches get stuck in San Jose homes
The South Bay's housing stock creates the same few problems again and again.
Garden apartments and condos from the 1970s and 80s. Exterior stairs with a landing turn halfway down. A long sofa has to be stood on end, and a sleeper sofa has to be carried by three people.
High-rises downtown and in North San José. The couch has to fit the service elevator, and the building may want an elevator reservation and a certificate of insurance first. JunkRabbit emails a COI within one hour.
Eichlers. Glass walls, narrow hallways and no garage door in some layouts mean careful carrying through the living space.
Power recliners and sectionals. Unplug them a day before and separate the sections if you can.
If a couch truly will not fit out the way it came in, the oversize price of $185 covers disassembly or cutting it apart.
Booking a pickup
Take one photo of the couch from the front and one of the route out, then get your price on the instant quote page or pick the item from the list. The price is shown before you book and only changes if you approve a change.
Choose a two-hour arrival window. Crews work seven days a week from 8am to midnight, and if you book by 4 PM the pickup can usually happen the same day. You do not need to move anything to the curb. The crew carries the couch out from wherever it sits, whether that is a bonus room in Evergreen or a living room in Japantown.
If the couch is in good shape, mention it. We try to donate usable items when local charities accept them, and we recycle whatever we can. Combine it with anything else you are clearing to make the visit count, because the order minimum is $100 and a couch alone is already past it.
