The short answer

Storage unit cleanouts have their own flat prices by unit size, for a unit that is full. A 5 by 5 is $226, a 5 by 10 is $397, a 10 by 10 is $587, a 10 by 15 is $880 and a 10 by 20 is $1,174. A unit that is only partly full may come in lower on a truck-fill tier. The price is set from photos before you book, and it includes loading and disposal.

Why so many South Bay storage units end up as cleanouts

Square footage in Silicon Valley is expensive, and storage units fill the gap. People rent them during a move, a remodel, a divorce or a relocation, planning to empty them in a few months.

Then the plans change. The tech job moves to another state. The ADU in the backyard is finished and the furniture no longer fits. A parent passes away and the unit holds their apartment. The monthly rent keeps going long after anyone has opened the door.

At some point the math flips. A few years of storage rent can exceed what the contents would cost to replace, and much of what sits in long-term storage is particleboard furniture, old electronics and boxes nobody has opened since they were packed. That is when a cleanout makes sense. Doing it in one visit means you can give notice and stop paying.

Flat prices by unit size

Unit size (full)Flat price
Storage Unit (5×5)$226
Storage Unit (5×10)$397
Storage Unit (5×15)$539
Storage Unit (10×10)$587
Storage Unit (10×15)$880
Storage Unit (10×20)$1,174
Storage Unit (10×25)$1,463
Storage Unit (10×30)$1,757

These are prices for full units. If the unit is half empty, a truck-fill tier may be lower. A 10 by 10 that is half full might fit a half truck at $431 instead of the full-unit price of $587.

If you rent two small units, add them: two 5 by 10s are $397 + $397 = $794.

Partial units and mixed jobs

Many storage jobs are not all-or-nothing. You might be keeping a few boxes of photos and a rocking chair and letting the rest go.

Pull out what you are keeping first, or mark it clearly with tape. Then photograph what is left. The quote is based on what is going, not on the size of the unit.

Often a storage cleanout is one part of a bigger move. A relocating family might have a 10 by 10 in Santa Clara, a full garage in Cambrian and an apartment downtown to clear. You can book each separately and get a flat price for each location.

Single heavy items in storage are priced from the list as well. A sleeper sofa is $149, a solid wood armoire $197 and an upright piano $364. A half-full unit with a piano in it might be $431 + $364 = $795.

Facility rules to check first

Self-storage facilities have their own rules, and checking them ahead of time saves a wasted trip.

  • Access hours. Gate hours vary by facility. Book your window inside them.
  • Who can enter. Some facilities require the tenant to be present or to give an access code to a named vendor.
  • Insurance paperwork. If the facility asks for a certificate of insurance, JunkRabbit emails it within one hour of booking.
  • Dumpster rules. Facilities generally prohibit tenants from using their dumpsters for unit contents and charge for anything left behind.
  • Move-out notice. Find out how much notice the facility needs, so the cleanout and the end of your rental line up.

A unit left with junk inside after you give notice usually becomes a cleanup charge on your account.

What can and cannot go

Almost everything that people store can go at the flat price: furniture, mattresses, boxes, clothing, books, sports equipment, holiday decorations and appliances.

Electronics are universal waste in California and cannot go in household trash, so they need to go somewhere that accepts e-waste. That is covered by the flat price.

Paint is accepted. Hazardous items such as fuel cans, solvents and pool chemicals are not standard and are handled case by case. Most storage facilities forbid storing them in the first place, so they are uncommon, but mention them if you find any.

Go through boxes for documents before they leave. Storage units are where tax records, passports and family photos end up by accident. Once a box is in the truck, it is gone.

Booking a storage cleanout

Open the unit, stand at the door and take a wide photo, then one or two angled shots so the depth is visible. Upload them on the instant quote page, or pick the unit size from the list. The price is fixed before you book and only changes if you approve a change.

Choose a two-hour arrival window inside the facility's access hours. Crews work seven days a week from 8am to midnight, and same-day pickup is often available when you book by 4 PM.

Vetted, insured local haulers load everything that is going. We try to donate usable items when local charities accept them, and we recycle whatever we can. Then you can give notice and stop paying rent on things you did not want.
