The short answer
Pick the hauler that gives you a total price for your exact items before arrival, carries them out from wherever they are, is insured and can produce a certificate of insurance, includes disposal and handles California's special items properly. JunkRabbit publishes its flat prices, such as $126 for a sofa and $241 for a quarter truck, uses vetted, insured local haulers and emails COIs within one hour.
1. Can you give me the total before you arrive?
This is the most important question. Some junk removal companies price by volume on site: a crew arrives, looks at the pile and tells you a number. That can be fine, but you do not know the cost until the truck is in your driveway.
Others price by item or by truck fill from photos or a list, so you know the total before booking.
Ask the question plainly: what will this exact job cost, all-in? If the answer is a range, ask what would put you at the top of it. If the answer is that it depends on what they see, ask whether they will quote from photos.
JunkRabbit's answer is a flat price per item from a published list, or a truck-fill tier for larger loads, shown before you book. It only changes if you approve a change, for example if you add items on the day.
2. Do you carry it out, or is it curbside?
In San José, this question matters more than in most cities, because curbside removal already exists for free. The City's Junk Pickup takes up to 12 items at the curb on your garbage day, for owners and renters.
So if you are paying, you are usually paying for something the City does not do: carrying a sofa down three flights in a Santa Clara garden complex, wheeling a fridge out of a Cambrian garage, or clearing a whole house in Willow Glen.
Confirm that the price includes carrying items from where they sit, on any floor, with no stairs fee or walk-up fee. Some services are curbside-only by design. That is fine if your items are already at the curb, but it is not the same service.
3. Are you insured, and can you send a COI?
Junk removal involves heavy items moving through someone's home: past glass walls in an Eichler, over hardwood floors in a Rose Garden bungalow, down a hillside driveway in Almaden Valley. Accidents are rare, but insurance is what protects you if one happens.
Ask whether the company is insured. Then ask whether it can provide a certificate of insurance, and how fast.
That second question matters for anyone in a managed building. Apartment towers downtown and in North San José, condo complexes in Santa Clara and Sunnyvale, and many HOA communities require a COI naming the building before any vendor works on site. A hauler that takes days to produce one can push your job back.
JunkRabbit is fully insured, works with vetted, insured local haulers and emails COIs within one hour of booking.
4. Is disposal included?
Disposal is a real cost. Transfer stations such as Zanker Recycling and the SMaRT Station charge by the ton, the cubic yard or the item. Ask whether the price you are quoted includes it, for every item.
Pay special attention to the items California treats differently:
- Electronics. TVs, monitors and most electronics are universal waste and cannot go in household trash.
- Refrigerant appliances. Fridges, freezers and AC units need refrigerant recovered by a certified technician before scrapping.
- Mattresses. California has its own mattress recycling program.
A hauler should know these rules without being asked. On JunkRabbit's list, disposal is included in every price.
5. When can you come, and how precise is the window?
Timing is the other big variable. Ask how soon they can come and how precise the arrival window is. A four-hour window on a weekday can mean a lost workday.
Ask about same-day pickup if you have a deadline, and whether evenings or weekends cost more.
JunkRabbit runs seven days a week from 8am to midnight. You choose a two-hour arrival window, and booking by 4 PM usually means same-day pickup, with no same-day surcharge.
6 and 7. Where does it go, and what do you not take?
Where does it go? Ask whether usable items are donated and whether materials are recycled. A good answer is honest about limits. JunkRabbit's is that we try to donate usable items when local charities accept them, and we recycle whatever we can.
What do you not take? Every hauler has limits, usually around hazardous waste. JunkRabbit accepts paint, at $30 per gallon can. Other hazardous products are handled case by case, so ask.
Once you have asked all seven questions, compare like with like. A cheap quote that excludes carry-out and disposal is not cheaper than a higher one that includes both. Check JunkRabbit's full San Jose price list or get a photo quote on the instant quote page.
Frequently asked questions
What should I ask a junk removal company in San Jose?
Ask for the all-in total before arrival, whether they carry items out, whether they are insured and can send a COI, whether disposal is included, how precise the arrival window is, where items go and what they do not take.
Why does a COI matter?
Many San José apartment towers, condos and HOAs require a certificate of insurance naming the building before a vendor can work. JunkRabbit emails one within one hour.
Is a lower quote always cheaper?
Not if it excludes carry-out, stairs or disposal. Compare the total for the same job, including every item.
Does JunkRabbit charge for stairs?
No. Crews carry items out from any floor, with no stairs fee or walk-up fee.
How fast can JunkRabbit come?
Usually the same day when you book by 4 PM, in a two-hour window you choose, seven days a week from 8am to midnight.
