The short answer

Bed frames are not covered by California's mattress take-back program, so they go out with your other furniture. In San José the City's free Junk Pickup accepts furniture at the curb on your garbage day. A flat pickup from inside is $68 for a standard metal or platform frame, $126 for a solid, upholstered or storage frame in twin to queen, and $152 for the same in king or Cal king.

Why frames are a separate problem

When you buy a new mattress with delivery, California requires the retailer to offer to take back your old mattress at no additional cost. That obligation covers the mattress. It does not cover the frame, the headboard or the bunk bed it sits on.

That gap catches people. The delivery crew takes the old queen, leaves the new one on a frame that does not match it, and you are left with a heavy wooden frame in pieces against the bedroom wall.

Frames are also awkward in a way mattresses are not. A metal frame collapses into a bundle of rails that fits in most cars. A solid wood sleigh bed or a storage bed with drawers built into the base is heavy, bulky and full of hardware. An upholstered frame attracts the same dust and pet hair a mattress does. Plan for the type you actually have.

Option 1: the City's Junk Pickup

Inside San José city limits, the Environmental Services Department's Junk Pickup takes furniture at no charge. It is open to single-family homes and multi-family complexes, renters and owners, and each request covers up to 12 items.

Request it through 311, and expect confirmation within two business days. The pickup happens on your regular garbage and recycling day, and items go out on the street by the curb no more than 24 hours ahead, away from red zones, hydrants and parked cars.

Disassembled, a frame can count as several items if the pieces are loose, so bundle the rails and slats together with tape or twine. Keep the hardware in a bag taped to the headboard. If the mattress and box spring are going too, they fit in the same request. That makes the City program a good fit for a full bed in a house with a driveway.

Option 2: scrap, sell or give away

A plain steel frame is mostly metal, and some people take it to a scrap recycler along with other metal from the garage. On its own, the value is small, but it costs nothing if you are going anyway.

Solid wood frames, bunk beds and loft beds are worth listing, especially in June and August when students are moving in and out around SJSU, Santa Clara University and De Anza College. Daybeds and trundle beds sell well to families making space for guests.

Include the hardware and assembly instructions if you still have them. Buyers back away from a frame with a missing bolt. Take it apart before you list it, because a buyer who arrives with a sedan and an Allen key will not want to spend an hour in your bedroom.

Upholstered frames rarely resell. Unless it is close to new, plan to dispose of it.

Flat prices for frames and beds

ItemFlat price
Bed Frame (Standard / Metal / Platform)$68
Bed Frame (Solid / Upholstered / Storage) — Twin / Full / Queen$126
Bed Frame (Solid / Upholstered / Storage) — King / Cal King$152
Headboard$57
Adjustable Bed Base (Motorized)$118
Bunk Bed$123
Bunk Bed — Solid Wood / Loft$148
Daybed$89
Trundle Bed$100
Murphy Bed (Wall Bed)$130

A metal frame with a mattress and box spring set is $68 + $143 = $211. A solid king frame with a king mattress and box spring is $152 + $114 + $92 = $358.

The order minimum is $100, so a $68 metal frame alone bills at $100. Add a headboard and it is $68 + $57 = $125.

Taking a frame apart

Most frames come apart with a hex key and a Phillips screwdriver. Start by removing the slats or the support deck, then unbolt the side rails from the headboard and footboard. Keep every bolt in a bag.

Storage beds are the slow ones. The drawers come out first, then the base panels, which are often heavy particleboard. Murphy beds are another level, because they are anchored to studs and have spring or piston mechanisms that should not be released carelessly. Leave those to the crew.

Adjustable bases need unplugging at least a day ahead so the base can be lowered flat. They are heavy, and they have a motor and a control box.

If you book a pickup, you do not have to disassemble anything. The crew handles it. Taking a frame apart yourself saves no money, because the price is flat either way. It can save a few minutes if the bedroom door is tight.

Booking and timing

Photograph the frame assembled or in pieces, plus the mattress if it is going too, and get a price on the instant quote page. The total shows before you book and only changes if you approve.

Crews work seven days a week from 8am to midnight in two-hour windows, and booking by 4 PM usually means same-day pickup. That matters most on mattress delivery day: book the old frame for the morning and the bedroom is empty when the new bed arrives.

There is no stairs fee, so a bunk bed from a second-floor bedroom in a Berryessa townhouse costs the same as a frame from a ground-floor ranch house in Willow Glen. We try to donate usable items when local charities accept them, and we recycle whatever we can, including the steel from metal frames.

Frequently asked questions

Does mattress take-back include the bed frame?

No. California's retailer take-back requirement covers the old mattress when a new one is delivered. Frames, headboards and bunk beds go out with your other furniture.

Will San José's Junk Pickup take a bed frame?

Yes, furniture is accepted. Bundle loose rails and slats so they count sensibly against the 12-item limit, and set them out no more than 24 hours before your garbage-day appointment.

How much is bed frame removal?

A standard metal or platform frame is $68. Solid, upholstered or storage frames are $126 in twin to queen and $152 in king or Cal king. The order minimum is $100.

Do I need to take the frame apart first?

No. The crew disassembles it if needed, and the price does not change. Unplug adjustable bases a day ahead.

Can you take the frame and mattress together?

Yes. A metal frame with a mattress and box spring set is $68 + $143 = $211, carried out from any floor.
