The short answer
A refrigerator holds refrigerant that has to be recovered by a certified technician before the unit can be scrapped, so it needs a route that handles that step. Your options are retailer haul-away with a new delivery, a neighbor-city appliance program, self-hauling to a facility that accepts appliances, or a flat pickup. JunkRabbit charges $164 for a standard fridge, $183 for a side-by-side or French door and $238 for a built-in.
Why a fridge is different from other junk
Refrigerators, freezers, wine coolers and anything else with a sealed cooling system contain refrigerant. Federal rules under the EPA's section 608 program require that refrigerant be recovered by a certified technician before the appliance is scrapped, and California's rules for major appliances point the same way.
In practice, that means a fridge cannot go in a compactor truck with the rest of the bulky waste. It has to end up at a place that will recover the refrigerant properly and then recycle the steel, copper and plastic.
Do not try to cut the lines yourself to make a fridge lighter. Venting refrigerant is exactly what the rules exist to stop. Do empty it, defrost it and wipe it out a day before it goes. A fridge full of thawed food in a warm garage is unpleasant for everyone who has to handle it.
Option 1: retailer haul-away
If the old fridge is leaving because a new one is arriving, this is the easiest route. Many appliance retailers offer to haul away the old unit when they deliver the new one, sometimes for a fee.
Ask at the time of purchase, not on delivery day. Confirm that the crew will take it from where it is, not just from the curb. Confirm whether it needs to be disconnected from the water line first. A French door fridge with an ice maker needs its supply line shut off and capped, and some crews will not touch plumbing.
This route does nothing for the second fridge. Plenty of ranch houses in Cambrian, Blossom Valley and Westgate have an older fridge humming in the garage, full of drinks and overflow groceries. When it finally dies, nobody is delivering a replacement, and the retailer route does not exist.
Option 2: city programs and self-hauling
San José's Junk Pickup is free for owners and renters and takes up to 12 items per request. The full accepted-items list is on the City's page, so check there for appliances before you book.
Santa Clara's Annual Cleanup Campaign accepts appliances. In 2026 it ran April 27 to May 22, for residents only. Mountain View's two yearly Recology cleanups include up to three bulky items per appointment.
For self-hauling, Zanker Recycling on Los Esteros Road in North San José and the SMaRT Station in Sunnyvale are the large facilities nearby. Call ahead to confirm they take refrigerant appliances and what they charge.
Moving a fridge yourself is real work. You need an appliance dolly with straps, two people and a truck tall enough to keep it upright. Laying a fridge on its side can damage the compressor, which matters if you are selling it but not if it is going for scrap.
Flat prices for fridges and freezers
| Item | Flat price |
|---|---|
| Refrigerator (Standard) | $164 |
| Refrigerator (Side-by-Side / French Door) | $183 |
| Refrigerator — Built-in / Sub-Zero | $238 |
| Mini Fridge | $115 |
| Freezer (Chest) | $146 |
| Freezer (Upright) | $149 |
| Wine Cooler (Small / Countertop) | $111 |
| Wine Cooler (Large / Floor) | $156 |
| Ice Maker | $115 |
The classic garage pair, an old fridge and a chest freezer, is $164 + $146 = $310. A kitchen remodel that pulls a built-in fridge and a floor wine cooler is $238 + $156 = $394.
Each price includes carry-out, loading and disposal, and we recycle whatever we can. There is no stairs fee and no same-day surcharge.
Built-ins and remodels
Kitchen remodels are steady work in San José's older neighborhoods. Willow Glen and the Rose Garden have homes being updated or rebuilt, and Almaden Valley and the Los Gatos hills have big kitchens with panel-front built-in refrigerators.
Built-ins are a different job. They are taller, deeper and much heavier than a freestanding fridge. They are often anchored to the cabinetry and plumbed into a water line. The $238 price covers carrying one out, but the unit needs to be disconnected and pulled free of its cabinet surround first. Usually that is the contractor's job on demo day.
Coordinate the timing. Book the pickup for the day the fridge comes out, so it does not sit in a driveway or block the garage while the contractor works. If you are clearing the old range, dishwasher and cabinets at the same time, add them to the same visit.
Getting it booked
Take a photo of the fridge and the path to the door, then get your price on the instant quote page. The price is shown before you book and only changes if you approve a change.
Empty the fridge, unplug it and leave the doors propped open the night before so it defrosts. Shut off and disconnect the ice-maker water line if there is one. Clear a path through the kitchen.
Vetted, insured local haulers carry it out from any floor, whether it is a garage in Evergreen, a second-floor condo kitchen in Campbell or a tower unit downtown. If the building needs a certificate of insurance, JunkRabbit emails it within one hour. Book by 4 PM and pickup is usually possible the same day, in a two-hour window you pick.
Frequently asked questions
Can I put a refrigerator out with the trash in San Jose?
No. A fridge contains refrigerant that has to be recovered by a certified technician before scrapping. Check the City's Junk Pickup accepted-items list, use retailer haul-away, self-haul to a facility that accepts appliances, or book a pickup.
How much does refrigerator removal cost?
A standard fridge is $164, a side-by-side or French door $183 and a built-in or Sub-Zero $238. A mini fridge is $115. The price includes carry-out from any floor.
Do I have to drain the refrigerant?
No, and you should not try. Recovery has to be done by a certified technician. Just empty, unplug and defrost the fridge the day before.
Can you take a fridge from my garage?
Yes. Garage fridges and chest freezers are common pickups. Together they are $164 + $146 = $310, carried straight from the garage to the truck.
Is there a stairs fee for an upstairs kitchen?
No. Crews carry appliances out from any floor at the same flat price. A fridge from a third-floor condo costs the same $164 as one from a garage.
