The short answer
A standard hot tub or spa is $390 to remove, and a large 6 to 8 person spa is $501. The price covers getting it out of the backyard, through the side yard or gate, loading it and disposal. Before pickup, an electrician needs to disconnect the power and the tub needs to be drained. There is no extra charge for a long carry or a sloped yard.
Why hot tubs are a South Bay job
A lot of San José backyards have, or had, a hot tub. The ranch houses of Cambrian, Blossom Valley, Santa Teresa and Evergreen were built with private backyards, and a spa on a pad or a deck became a standard addition over the years.
Many of those tubs are now old. Covers have failed, heaters have died, and some have been sitting empty for years. They come out when a yard is being redone, when a home is being sold, or when the space is wanted for something else, such as an ADU in the backyard.
Hillside homes in Almaden Valley, the Los Gatos foothills and Saratoga add their own challenge. Tubs on raised decks overlooking the valley look wonderful, but they can be a long, steep carry from the street.
Flat prices for hot tubs and backyard items
| Item | Flat price |
|---|---|
| Hot Tub / Spa | $390 |
| Hot Tub / Spa — 6-8 Person | $501 |
| Cold Plunge Tub | $271 |
| Sauna (1-2 Person / Barrel / Infrared) | $293 |
| Above-Ground Pool (Frame + Liner) | $145 |
| Lumber / Wood Scrap (bundle) | $41 |
| Concrete / Masonry Debris (per 1/4 truck) | $219 |
| Patio Table | $89 |
| Patio Chair (Each) | $30 |
A hot tub with two bundles of old deck boards is $390 + $41 + $41 = $472. A large spa plus its broken-up concrete pad is $501 + $219 = $720.
All carrying, loading and disposal is included.
Before pickup day
Three things need to happen before a crew can move a hot tub.
- Disconnect the power. Hot tubs are hard-wired to a dedicated circuit, often through a disconnect box on the house wall. An electrician should shut it off and disconnect the wiring safely. Never cut live wires.
- Drain the tub. Use the drain valve or a submersible pump, and direct the water away from the house. A full tub holds hundreds of gallons and is impossible to move.
- Clear the path. Measure the side gate and the narrowest point of the route. Move bikes, bins and pots out of the way, and unlock any gates.
If the tub has been sitting full of old water for years, draining it can take a while, and the water may smell. Do it a day or two before.
Side yards, gates and slopes
The route out is the real variable in a San José hot tub job.
Narrow side yards. Many post-war ranch houses have a side yard only a few feet wide between the house and the fence, with an AC condenser and trash bins in the way. A tub may need to be turned on its side to fit through the gate.
Raised decks. Hillside homes in Almaden Valley and Los Gatos often have tubs on decks. Getting a tub down off a deck takes planning.
Long driveways. Some hillside lots have the truck parked far from the backyard.
The flat price does not change for any of this. Photograph the route as well as the tub, so the crew arrives with the right equipment. If a fence panel needs to come off to get the tub out, plan that in advance with whoever will put it back.
Old decks, pads and treated wood
When a hot tub goes, the deck or pad under it often goes too.
Deck boards and framing are priced by the bundle at $41. A small surround might be two or three bundles. A full deck is larger and may be cheaper on a truck tier. Concrete pads broken into pieces are $219 per quarter truck of concrete or masonry debris.
One thing to flag: old decks are often built from pressure-treated wood. Treated wood is handled separately at local facilities, and Zanker Recycling lists it at its highest rate. Tell us if the deck is treated so it can be loaded and routed properly.
Yard waste around the tub, such as overgrown shrubs and roots, is also something you can mention. Under California's SB 1383 organics law, yard waste goes to organics processing rather than landfill.
Booking a hot tub removal
Take a photo of the hot tub, one of the electrical disconnect, and one or two of the path from the backyard to the street. Upload them on the instant quote page, and the price is set before you book. It only changes if you approve.
Choose a two-hour arrival window. Crews work seven days a week from 8am to midnight, and booking by 4 PM often means same-day service, if the tub is already drained and disconnected.
Vetted, insured local haulers do the carrying. If you live in an HOA community that wants a certificate of insurance, we email it within one hour. We recycle whatever we can, and the frame, pump and heater of a hot tub contain metal worth recovering.
Frequently asked questions
How much does hot tub removal cost in San Jose?
A standard hot tub or spa is $390. A large 6 to 8 person spa is $501. The price includes carry-out, loading and disposal.
Do I need an electrician first?
Yes. Hot tubs are hard-wired, so have an electrician disconnect the power safely before pickup day.
Does the tub need to be drained?
Yes. Drain it completely a day or two before. A full tub is far too heavy to move.
Can you remove the deck too?
Yes. Deck lumber is $41 per bundle, and concrete or masonry debris is $219 per quarter truck. Tell us if the wood is pressure-treated.
Is there an extra fee for a hillside or a narrow side yard?
No. The flat price covers the carry from the backyard to the truck, whatever the route.
